Lakes dismiss E-TC, Glads girls beat Baraga

EWEN – Only one half wasn’t good enough for Ewen-Trout Creek at home against Lake Linden-Hubbell Friday night.

The Panthers were in the non-league girls’ basketball game at the break, down 25-23, but the Lakes surged away in the last 16 minutes for the 54-30 win.

“They came out and shot very well in the second half, played very well and we did not shoot very well,” E-TC coach Jacky Besonen said.

The Panthers (0-3) had just one field goal and seven points in the second half.

The Lakes, meanwhile, maintained their output with 29 second-half points. Leading the way for LL-H (2-1) were Sarah Audette and Abby Sutherland, who had 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Besonen said she knew that Audette was a good player and that Sutherland surprised her with her abilities.

“Our girls weren’t able to stay in front of her, she’d cross over, go to the basket and put it in,” she said.

Taylor Niemi led E-TC with 14 points. The Panthers play at Wakefield-Marenisco Monday.

LL-H returns to Ontonagon County to face Ontonagon on Tuesday night.

BARAGA – A tough night on the boards and rough start to the second half put Baraga in a hole it couldn’t escape from Friday, resulting in a narrow Copper Country Conference defeat to Ontonagon.

After an even first half, the Gladiators outscored the Lady Vikings 10-2, which gave the visitors the edge they needed.

“We got behind and with that 10-point cushion they had, it was tough catching up once they got that,” Baraga coach Daryl Putala said.

Putala was unhappy with his team’s rebounding, hampered by the loss of forward Gabby Mayo to injury in the first half.

“That’s where they did their damage, on the offensive boards,” he said.

Three Glads scored in double figures, led by 18 points from Brooke Turin. Lori Wardynski kicked in 12 and Molly Domitrovich had 10.

Melissa Putala scored a team-high 10 for Baraga (0-3, 0-2 CCC). The Lady Vikings host Chassell Tuesday.

Ontonagon, now 2-0, 1-0 in the CCC, hosts Lake Linden-Hubbell Tuesday.
