2-0 weekend for Jeffers, Calumet ties at home
GAYLORD – The Jeffers Jets picked up a pair of tough wins below the bridge at the Gaylord Division 3 Challenge.
Jeffers came from behind to beat the hosts 6-3 late Friday, then fought off a comeback from Jackson Lumen Christi to win 4-2 Saturday.
Goals from Drew Morris and Tyler Bailey put the Jets up 2-0 after two periods Saturday, but Lumen Christi scored twice in the first five minutes of the third to tie it up.
The vital goal came from Alex Sears at 9:50 of the third period, followed by a late empty-netter from Morris.
Dax Durocher came up big as well, making 38 saves to help the Jets, who were outshot.
In the Friday game, the Jets scored four times in the second period, three on the power play, to overcome a 2-0 deficit after the first.
Anthony Harris had two of the tallies, with the others going to Brady Guilbault and Morris.
Sears and Bailey tacked on goals in the third for the Jets, who got 22 saves from Durocher.
Jeffers (4-1) hosts Merrill, Wis., Friday night.
Calumet 6, Farmington Unified 6 (OT)
CALUMET – Matthew Prouty scored the game-tying goal shorthanded with 4:04 to play as Calumet forced an overtime tie with the Farmington Unified Flyers.
Prouty’s goal was the fourth time the Copper Kings had come from behind to equalize after they trailed 2-0, 3-2, 5-3 and 6-5.
Eric Mattila and Tyler Loukus each bagged a pair of goals for Calumet (1-5-1), which was outshot 45-33.
Ian Carroll made 39 saves for the Copper Kings, who are at Houghton Tuesday night.
