Calumet Township to hold public hearing
CALUMET – Calumet Township’s Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing Friday to discuss the township’s five-year recreation plan.
The plan includes all aspects of the township’s recreation prospects for 2014 through 2018.
“The plan includes everything, the Legion Field, Waterworks, ball fields, Calumet Lake – all that stuff is mentioned in the plan,” said Paul Lehto, township supervisor.
It will also include updates on what has been accomplished since the last five-year recreation plan was created as well as projects the township is expecting to take on during the next five years.
One such project is the purchase of the railroad depot in Calumet from a private company for public use.
“We are including the train station in our five-year recreation plan. We do not have a grant but this will allow us to apply for grants,” Lehto said.
According to the written plan, the township expects to “acquire the former railroad depot located in the township, and renovate it into a trail center/trail headquarters with restrooms, showers, lockers, meeting space, office space and community space for recreational activities.”
The township is required to have such a plan on file with the Department of Natural Resources before being able to apply for any grants to fund proposed projects.
Lehto said grant applications for the train depot renovations will begin once the new plan is filed.
In order to officially adopt the new plan, the board is required to hold a public hearing. During their regular meeting at 1 p.m. Friday, Lehto and board members will be seeking public input on the plan.
“At the meeting the public can offer any input to the plan – any new ideas, any corrections or anything that may be missing,” Lehto said.
Friday will be the only public hearing for the new plan, which Lehto hopes to have finalized by the end of January.
For those unable to attend the meeting or who wish to view the plan in advance, it is available online at calumet.yolasite.com.
The meeting will take place at the Township Office at 25880 Red Jacket Rd. in Calumet.
