Singer-Songwriter Glen Martin

HANCOCK?- If you’re looking for a change of pace from all the Christmas music that’s been playing nonstop everywhere you go, The Orpheum Theater might have just the ticket as musician Glen Martin is set to take the stage Saturday night.

Martin’s musical influences date back to the 60s and 70s singer-songwriters.

“Bob Dylan, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, those kind of things,” Martin said. “I like a lot of Americana, old, classic country music. My stuff is kind of a blend of all that.”

Martin has never played at The Orpheum Theater before and this will be his first trip into the Copper Country to play.

However, Martin can still lay claim to being a Yooper, as he was born and raised in Iron Mountain. He currently resides in Los Angeles.

In August and September he went across the country on tour.

“I started in Los Angeles and went to New York City and hit everywhere in between,” Martin said.

Martin said he concentrates a lot on his lyrics in his music. Some of them are bittersweet love songs and some of them are humorous.

“With some of my sad songs they usually end in a positive message,” he said. “It may sound hopeless but in the end there’s hope,” Martin said.

As of now, Martin has put out two EPs, “Electric Baby” and a self-titled album, but is working on releasing a full-length album later this year.

Martin is a self-described multi-instrumentalist, playing saxophone, guitar and piano.

“A little bit of everything,” Martin said.

The gig at The Orpheum Theater was set up through his friend Steven Michael Holmes, who will be opening for him Saturday night.

Martin said he is looking forward to playing up here.

“I’ve always wanted to play (up here),” Martin said. “I played Marquette, I played Iron Mountain. I haven’t even been to Houghton in a long time. Usually when I’m home I’m only here for three or four days so I don’t really get to make it up there.”

Glen Martin plays Saturday night at 8 p.m. at The Orpheum Theater.
