Ruth M. Mutkala
PELKIE – Ruth Miriam Mutkala, 91, of Pelkie, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse.
Ruth was born May 6, 1922, in Pelkie, daughter to John and Anna (Kokko) Pesonen. She attended Giddings School in Pelkie. She married Toivo Mutkala on August 3, 1946.
Ruth was a member of Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, baking, cooking, playing scrabble, and cross country skiing. Ruth also enjoyed making pasties and being with her family, and feeding them on all the holidays; many times 18 to 24 persons at meals.
Surviving are her husband, Toivo of Bayside Village in L’Anse; daughters, Carol (Rodney) Lindrus of Hancock, Alice (Jerry Hribal of Dearborn Heights) Mutkala of Negaunee, Jean (James) Grentz of Nisula, Mich.; brothers, Norman (Doris) Pesonen of Lewiston, Mich., James (Clarice) Pesonen of L’Anse; sisters, Mildred Hill of Baraga, Thelma Turpeinen of Baraga; six grandchildren, Cathy Manninen, Jon (Beth) Lindrus, Gordon Grentz, Chad (Heather) Grentz, Jesse (Kiley) Grentz, Dustin (Kimberly) Grentz; 12 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Jordon, Carter, Dylan, Ethan, Mara, Aiden, Elise, Sam, Gabriel, Joelle, and Jackson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents, John and Anna Pesonen; siblings, Rueben, Edward, Eleanor Gough, Elmer, Carlo, Paul; and infants, Kenneth and Jean Pesonen.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 7th from 11 to 1 p.m. in the Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the church with Rev. William Chapel officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in the Pelkie Cemetery.
