Bernice Elizabeth (Johnston) MacDonald

LAURIUM – Bernice Elizabeth (Johnston) MacDonald, 95, a resident of Tamarack Street in Laurium, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, January 7, 2014.

She was born on November 28, 1918, in Detroit a daughter of the late Victor and Nina (Nichols) Johnston. Bernice moved at the age of 13 from Detroit to the Nichols Farm in Valley View.

On May 6, 1939, she was married to Ovid “Scottie” MacDonald and he preceded her in death on November 24,1991.

Bernice was a kind and loving person and always put everyone’s needs before her own. That love and kindness was especially shown toward her family. When she wasn’t with her family she enjoyed spending time knitting and crocheting. She also was an avid scrabble player, playing with her cousin Nina several days a week.

Preceding her in death was her husband; and two children, Robert MacDonald and Sandra Smith.

Surviving are children, Jeanne MacDonald of Grand Rapids, Mich., Lawrence (Kay) MacDonald of Oregon, Peter (Christina) MacDonald of Laurium, Ruth Mast of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Judy Koivunen of Appleton, Wis.; 24 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Ken Toth to officiate.

Friends may call at the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
