Ronald Kommes

FREDA – Ronald Kommes, 56, a resident of Freda passed away Wednesday morning, January 8, 2014, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain where he had been a patient for the past two months.

He was born on March 5, 1957, in Hancock, a son of the late Alfred and Gertrude (DeForge) Kommes. Ron was raised in Toivola and graduated from Jeffers High School with the class of 1975.

Mr. Kommes was a veteran having served with the United States Navy.

Ron returned to Toivola and was employed at the Mosquito Inn.

On August 20, 1994, he was united in marriage to the former Barbara Manninen. The couple had resided in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., where Ron had worked for the Stone Harbor resort as a maintenance man. They returned to the Copper Country to make their home most recently in Freda. Locally Ron had worked as a handyman, also was employed with Shopko and currently was working with the Public Safety Department for Finlandia University.

Mr. Kommes was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Houghton. Ron enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed bowling and play pool in various leagues. He also enjoyed volunteering to drive the local VA van to Iron Mountain.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Alfred (Lorna) Kommes and Gertrude (Ray) Durocher; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ralph and Lillian Manninen; sister-in-law, Nancy Castro and brother-in-law, Joe Karry.

Surviving are his loving wife, Barbara Kommes of Freda; his sisters and brothers, Donna (Kim) Maki of Freda, Doreen (Jerry) Swetich of Edgemere, Alfred (Janie) Kommes of Houghton, Norman (Jodi) Kommes of Chassell and Pete (Ranny) Kommes of Shreveport, LA.; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Lundy Castro of North Grosse Pointe Shores, Ralph (Liisa) Manninen of Trout Creek, Mich., and Laura (Dave) Clark of Hillsdale, Mich.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; many friends especially, Theresa Chobanian, Danny Manninen, Steve “Duppy” Manninen, Jo and Bill Guenzel.

A Memorial Service for Ron will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2014, in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Houghton with Rev. Bucky Beach to officiate. Where the Copper Country Veterans Association will hold military rites.

Friends may call on Sunday, January 12, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock and on Monday, January 13, 2014, from 1 p.m. until the time of services at the church.
