Gerald Robert Hocking

HANCOCK – Gerald Robert Hocking, 80, of the Hancock Canal area, died on Thursday night, January 9, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born in Hancock on April 24, 1933, a son of the late Raymond and Angeline (Mikesch) Hocking, graduating from Hancock High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1955.

On October 20, 1956 he was united in marriage to Ellen Beiswanger.

Jerry worked at several local companies including Turner Construction Company of White Pine, Atlas Powder Company, Hocking Construction, and Thornton Construction. He then worked at the Houghton County Road Commission until his retirement.

He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 6016. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially deer hunting.

Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Robert; a brother, Raymond; and his step-father, John “Jack” Ploof.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen, of Hancock; two sons, Michael of the Hancock Canal area and Robert (Jane) of Marshfield, Wis.; two daughters, Patti (Jim) Laux of Alston and Geraldine Hocking of Houghton; six grandchildren, Justin (Tammy) Nettell, Patrick Nettell, Michael Nettell, Eric Hocking, Daniel Hocking, and Megan Hocking; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Carole Kroll of Novi, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock with Rev. Amy Terhune of the First United Methodist Church in Hancock to officiate. Spring interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. until the time of services.
