Raymond T. Rantamaki

HANCOCK – Raymond T. Rantamaki, 85, of Salo Location, Hancock, and a resident of Cypress Manor Health & Rehabilitation Center, Hancock, died on Saturday, January 11, 2014.

He was born on November 25, 1928, in Salo Location, a son of the late August and Lydia (Kinnunen) Rantamaki, and attended the Salo and Hancock schools.

Ray worked on the family dairy farm as well as other area farms caring for cows, planting, haymaking, etc. He was never married.

Ray served with the U.S. Army at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., and in Germany in the early 1950s.

Ray is a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock.

As a young man, Ray enjoyed wood carving and drawing. Ray loved animals. He raised rabbits and always had a pet dog for a companion. He delighted in story-telling and entertained his nephew and nieces with his tales. He was known for his good humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herman, Reino and Weldon; sisters, Katherine (Helga) Bessner and Eva Moilanen; nephew, Edward J. Bessner; and niece, Cheryl (Liimatainen) Wojnicki.

Ray is survived by two sisters, Ida Montangue of Hancock and Sadie Liimatainen of Salo Location; sister-in-law, Janet Rantamaki of Houghton; nieces, Judith Ruotasala, Lillian Martinac, Carol Reeves, Linda Belle Isle, Patty Ohler, Darlene Renquist, Nancy Poynter; numerous grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, in the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock, with Pastor D.J. Rasner to officiate. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Spring burial with military rites will be in the Waasa Cemetery.
