Accused killer stands mute

HOUGHTON – A pretrial hearing has been set for the Dollar Bay man accused of killing his wife.

Nima Nassiri, 34, of Dollar Bay, stood mute to a charge of second-degree homicide at his arraignment in Houghton County Circuit Court Wednesday. The court treats standing mute as equivalent to a not guilty plea.

The charge states he had intent to kill but the act was not premeditated. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to up to life in prison.

Nassiri was arrested at their home on Dec. 8 for allegedly assaulting his wife, Sanaz Nezami, 27. She died four days later from her injuries in Marquette.

The couple had recently moved to the area. Nezami was enrolled to begin a master’s degree in environmental engineering at Michigan Technological University.

Nassiri’s pretrial was scheduled for approximately 30 days. He is lodged in the Houghton County Jail on $5 million bond.
