Arthur Melvin Byykkonen

CHASSELL – Arthur Melvin Byykkonen, 77, a resident of Chassell, died on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, in Mission, Texas, where he wintered with his wife, Irene.

He was born on February 24, 1936, in Elo, a son of the late John and Lempi (Kuopus) Byykkonen.

Art worked for Coca-Cola Company for 42 years, the first 10 years in Marquette, and the last 32 years in Hancock at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, retiring from there.

On March 3, 2014, he would have been married 33 years to Irene Hongisto.

He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell.

Art enjoyed 4-wheeling, camping, working with wood and being at the hunting camp with his family. He also loved being with his grandson, Brandon Thompson, cutting wood, working in the wood shop making bird houses, taking Brandon on the lawn mower with him and going 4-wheeling in the woods together.

Art is survived by his wife, Irene, of Chassell; a son, Scott Byykkonen of Billings, Mont.; three grandchildren, Taylor, Mitchel and Madison of Duluth, Minn.; a step-daughter, Susan (Rodney) Thompson of Dollar Bay; a grandson, Brandon Thompson of Dollar Bay; a step-son, John Saatio; and two step-grandchildren, John and Nichole Saatio.

Also surviving are brothers, Wesley (Ann) Byykkonen, Harold (Donna) Byykkonen; sisters, Ruth Maki, Esther Bohto and Sally (Gary) Johnson.

Besides his parents, Art was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bob, Howard and Edward Byykkonen; and three sisters, Florence Ketola, Alma Eilola and Nancy Cline.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell followed by interment in the Chassell Cemetery with a date and time to be announced later.
