Verna M. Roth

CALUMET – Verna M. Roth, 77, of Calumet, passed away January 16, 2014, at her home with her loving family in attendance.

Verna was born on November 17, 1936, at the family farm in Traprock Valley, the daughter of George and Selma (Savola) Rajaniemi. Verna attended the Copper City Schools and graduated from Calumet High School in 1955. She married James B. Roth on June 30, 1956, in Hancock.

Verna and Jimmy moved to Chicago, Ill., in 1955 where she worked for Playtex and Central Steel. The couple moved back to the Copper Country in 1961 and lived in Lake Linden and then Calumet, where they’ve made their home since 1962. Verna provided child care out of her home and at private residences for over 25 years and was a loving caretaker to countless children during this time.

Verna loved berry picking, spending time with her family, making jam, baking, looking at Christmas lights, spending time at the family farm and playing pinochle. Family and friends will miss her kind and gentle personality as well as her unconditional love. She showed great strength and “SISU” during her battles with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Margaret Yowell.

She will be sadly missed by her husband of 57 years, James; daughter, Sandra (Jeffrey) Lewin of Calumet and grandchildren, Jennifer Ellis and Alayna (Ryan) Ellis Couch; daughter, Debbie (Rod) Tarvinen of Lake Linden and grandchildren, Jeffrey (Stephanie) Laitala and Mandy Laitala; daughter, Lisa (Vinny) LaCombe of Marquette and granddaughter, Hailey; son, Ronald Roth of Midland and grandchildren, Noah and Emma; great grandchildren, Izabella and Mason Couch, Collin and Owen Laitala and Phoenix Nordmark; brother, Edwin Rajaniemi of Calumet; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff from Portage Home Care/Portage Health Hospice, Dr. Kristiina Hopper, and the UPCAP team for providing excellent care during the past few months. They would also like to thank the medical staffs at Mayo Clinic, Marshfield Clinic, Portage Health and Aspirus Keweenaw for their dedication and care during the past 10 years.

A memorial service will be held for Verna on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at 7 p.m. in the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet. Deacon Art Stancher will officiate.
