Hearing held for accused embezzler

L’ANSE – The Baraga woman charged in 2012 with embezzling from her employer was back in court for an evidentiary hearing Tuesday afternoon.

Cynthia Wadaga, 47, appeared in Baraga County Circuit Court Tuesday, as her attorney, George Hyde, sought documents relating to the case.

Hyde said he told O’Leary on Dec. 26 a disk containing files was unreadable. O’Leary said his secretary told him she had been able to read the disk; he said he would have her print out the information for Hyde.

Hyde said he would stay around to receive the files Tuesday.

Judge Charles Goodman said if possible, he would prefer the court avoid another adjournment of the trial date, as has happened already.

“This case has been pending a long time, and I’m sure everyone wants finality, including the court,” he said.

Hyde said a person with full access to the system would be able to print an overall audit that shows all activity within the QuickBooks system between specific dates. He asked the court to order O’Leary to provide the full audit within the week.

“I don’t want to file a motion to adjourn, but I’m this close again,” he said.

O’Leary said he would talk to his client to get the information.

“I’m not trying to be obstructive here,” he said. “I’ve tried to comply with the request, and quite frankly, I think I have.”

Wadaga allegedly embezzled from First Choice Auto Body, where she worked as office manager and bookkeeper from June 2009 to June 2011, according to an earlier Gazette article.

Wadaga is charged with embezzling more than $20,000 but less than $50,000, a 10-year felony. She is scheduled to stand trial in February.
