Houghton girls handle Flivvers trap

HOUGHTON – Houghton solved Kingsford’s trapping defense, and with it, the host Flivvers in non-league play Friday, winning 70-47.

“I thought overall, our girls played 32 minutes of basketball, never really had a dry spell or a weak quarter defensively, and I thought that was a big key in the game,” Houghton coach Julie Filpus said.

The Gremlins (12-1) gave themselves a cushion by outscoring the Flivvers 16-9 in the first quarter, but it wasn’t until midway through the second half they could truly consider the win in the books, with help from a balanced offense.

“We spread the floor out against their pressure, and knocking seven threes down by four different people, it keeps the defense a little more honest,” Filpus said.

Four Gremlins scored in double figures, led by 18 from Elisa Jurmu.

Ashlyn Kero put in 16, Sydney Dillinger 15 and Kelsie Richards 12. Jurmu had five steals and Richards eight rebounds.

Amber Larson led Kingsford with 13 points.

Houghton plays at L’Anse Monday in a key WestPAC showdown.

EWEN – It was tied midway through the fourth quarter, but E-TC coach Jacky Besonen said visiting Baraga made fewer careless turnovers and were stronger on the glass in an eight-point victory.

“Throughout the game, we need to get rid of those (careless turnovers), and I think that’s the difference in the game,” she said.
