United Way campaign breaks $90K
HOUGHTON – The Copper Country United Way’s annual fundraising campaign has crossed the $90,000 mark, although it’s still behind last year’s pace.
As of Monday, it had raised $92,118, a little more than 68 percent of its $135,000 goal. The campaign, which began in mid-September, ends on Feb. 28.
At the same point last year, the campaign had raised about $15,500 more, office manager Karen Sotala said.
She said the United Way is always thankful for public support, and encouraged people to help the United Way meet its goal.
“We only have until the end of February, which gives us one month,” she said. “If they think the agencies that we help fund are important to the community, then we need the community to make donations.”
The Copper Country United Way splits the money raised in the campaign among 14 local non-profit service organizations: Alzheimer’s Association, Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home for Abused Women, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Child & Families Services of the U.P., Dial Help, Inc., 4H of Houghton and Keweenaw counties, Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, Goodwill Industries – Calumet Work Center, Hiawathaland District Bay-Lakes Boy Scouts, Keweenaw Family Resource Center, Phoenix House, Salvation Army, U.P. Emergency Medical Services and Western U.P. Medical Care Access Coalition. Together, they respond to about 30,000 requests for assistance in Houghton and Keweenaw counties each year.
Partner agencies also often use the donations from the United Way as matching funds for government or private grant programs, creating a multiplier effect.
