Edward F. Stipech
REDONDO BEACH, Calif. – Lt. Col. (retired) Edward F. Stipech, a former Calumet resident passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014, at the Huntington Retirement Home in Torrance, California.
Edward was born on October 2, 1929, in Calumet, attended Calumet Schools and was a graduate of Troy State University in Troy, Alabama earning a B.S. degree in Business Administration.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1946 and served with World War II occupation forces in Austria where he met and married Hildagard Benishek. She preceded him in death in 2013. They had two children, Peter and Doris. He also served in Korea during the Korean Conflict as well as two tours of duty in Vietnam. He later worked in Vietnam as a civilian contractor during which time he met and married his wife of forty years, Charlene Huymg.
He retired from active duty with the Army in 1968 at Fort Rucker, Alabama as a Lt. Colonel with twenty-two years of service. Following retirement from the Army he began a second career with Northrup Corporation from which he retired in 1995 as Quality Assurance Manager of the Aircraft Division. During this time he worked in Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Iran and Viet Nam as well as the U.S.
Ed was a Master Army Aviator and aircraft maintenance officer qualified in both fixed and rotary wing aircraft, in which he accumulated over 7000 flight hours. During his military career he served in Austria, Germany, Korea, Viet Nam as well as a number of Army posts in the U.S. He had numerous awards and decorations. In his retirement he was an avid and accomplished golfer.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Exilda; and father, Edward S. Stipech; sisters, Delores (Ray) Ojala and Marion (Lynn) Francis.
He is survived by two children, Doris McKilligan of Broemer Road in Chassell and Peter of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Ernest (Mary Jane) of Lampi, MO, Frank (Sharon) of Broemer Road in Chassell, Donald (Pam) of Tehachapi, Calif.; wife, Charlene of Redondo Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren, Alexis (Rod) Wakeham of Trenton, Mich., Ian (Seda) Mckilligan of Ames, Iowa and Megan (Boone) Fiala of Calumet; four great-grandchildren, Atesh and Ada Mckilligan and Olivia and Isabella Wakeham.
Spring burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
