Houghton, Kingsford split swim meet

HOUGHTON – Houghton and Kingsford split honors in a rescheduled swim meet at HHS Monday.

The Houghton girls cruised to a 176-58 victory, while the Kingsford boys topped the Gremlins 129-91.

The meet is Houghton’s last before the U.P. Finals Feb. 15.

The Gremlin girls had nine wins in individual events, with Hannah Gundlach doubling up in the freestyle distances, taking the 200 free in 2:23.48 and the 500 in 6:27.43.

“The younger girls had some good swims tonight, lots of best times and some times that will help with them getting in the faster heats at UP Finals,” Houghton coach Roger Woods said. “Sophie Rowe dropped major time in the 200 and 500 freestyle, finishing off with a best time in the 400 freestyle relay. Cynthia Naber had a breakthrough in the 100 free like she did with the 50 earlier in the season.”

Houghton won both diving competitions, with Lauren Jackson racking up 183.45 points to lead all participants.

The Houghton boys had just one individual win, from Drew Meyer in the 500 free (5:28.35).

“We did not have a lot of returning boys, but we got huge improvements throughout the season capped off by some good performances tonight. Jacob Colling had another big drop in the 200 free, Greg Raskind and Logan O’Leary, big drops in the 200 IM, and Kirill Velat and Peter good swims in the 100 fly and 400 free relay,” Woods said.
