Houghton, Calumet both winners at MIHL Showcase

TRENTON – Houghton broke through in the third period for three goals and a 3-1 win over Brighton at the MIHL Showcase Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (15-6), who defeated Hancock and Calumet in their annual trip to the Copper Country in January, took a 1-0 lead on Brian Dowd’s goal at 7:46 of the first period and held it through a scoreless second frame.

After Brighton’s Danny Bosio went off for a hook in the first minute of the third period, Houghton took advantage, with Connor Hannon scoring the game-tying power play goal 1:04 into the frame.

Spencer Donnelly followed up with the eventual game winner barely two minutes later and Ray Brice tacked on an unassisted shorthanded insurance goal at 8:03 of the third.

Marcus Gloss made 20 saves for Houghton (17-3), which faces Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett this morning in a rematch of the 2012 Division 3 state championship game.

Calumet 5, Muskegon Mona Shores 4 (SO)

Calumet found itself in a rare situation Friday, participating in a shootout in its game at the MIHL Showcase against Muskegon Mona Shores, and winning it 3-1.

Because of the tight schedule at the Unlike the college game, the shootout counts as a win, Calumet’s fourth of the year.

Eric Mattila and Robert Erkkila scored to give Calumet a 2-1 lead in the shootout and after an unsuccessful Mona Shores attempt, Jake Anderson finished it off.

Calumet fell behind three different times, but Tyler Loukus’ goal with 52 seconds remaining tied it up.

Bradley Erkkila and Robert Erkkila both scored power play goals for the Kings (4-16-1), who trailed 3-2 after two frames.

Eric Mattila tied it at 9:53 of the third, only for Mona Shores to go ahead 30 seconds later.

Ian Carroll made 19 saves for Calumet, which plays Livonia Churchill today.
