Ontonagon girls down Jeffers

ONTONAGON – The Ontonagon girls turned up their defense in their second meeting with Jeffers in eight days and turned in a winning performance Friday, taking the Copper Country Conference game 44-26.

The 26 points against amounted to the Gladiators’ best defensive showing of the season. Coach Dick Franti said, though he hoped his team’s effective work played a major role, a cold night for the visitors helped, too.

“We missed our share of shots too but the fact that they were not scoring big kind of helped us,” he said.

Ontonagon led 24-15 at the half, and though its success rate didn’t improve after the break, neither did Jeffers, which didn’t put up a double-digit quarter.

“We were able to hit enough outside shots, especially three-pointers, that we were able to keep an eight- to ten-point lead most of the way,” Franti said.

The Glads (9-6, 6-2 CCC) made eight threes, with Molly Domitrovich canning four and Brooke Turin three. Both players co-led all scorers with 16 points.

Jeffers, which falls to 6-11 (4-4 CCC) got a team-best seven from Eden Klemett.

The Jets host Chassell Monday night, while Ontonagon’s next outing is Thursday at home against Baraga.
