Lions end women’s hockey streak

HANCOCK – The Finlandia women’s hockey team had its breakthrough moment Saturday at Houghton County Arena, winning for the first time in three years.

The Lions defeated Concordia (Wis.) 3-2, ending a 72-game winless streak dating back to Feb. 5, 2011.

Lindsey Jackman scored the game-winning goal at 18:46 of the second period of Finlandia’s home finale and Finlandia held the line throughout a scoreless third period despite being outshot 34-21 for the game.

Bailey Raffaelli gave Finlandia (1-19-0, 1-15-0 NCHA) an early lead near the midpoint of the first period, but the Falcons tied it late in the first and took the lead early in the second period. Siera Hache, one of three seniors, scored the equalizer at 15:28 and Jackman, a freshman, struck a few minutes later.

Taylor Gustafson made 32 saves to earn the win for the Lions, who conclude the season with two single-game road weekends starting Saturday at St. Scholastica.

Friday, the Lions lost a tight one 2-1 to Marian. Kim Harter scored unassisted at 11:07 of the first period to tie the game, but Marian scored seven minutes into the third period for the game’s deciding goal.

Breanna Merriam stopped 26 shots in defeat.

The Finlandia men concluded their home schedule with a pair of 5-2 home defeats to Marian.

Saturday, goals from Travis Armstrong and Scott Vargas helped the Lions close from 2-0 down after a period to 3-2 behind at the halfway point, but the Sabres scored twice in the second half of the period and held the Lions off the board in the third.

Troy Chandler and Andrew Brownlee combined to make 25 saves for the Lions.

Sunday, Ryan Daavettila gave Finlandia the lead 7:53 into the game, but Marian had the next four goals before Mike Montrose scored on a 5-on-3 late in the third.

Jordan Marr and Andrew Brownlee combined for 20 saves.

Finlandia (2-19-1, 1-15-0 NCHA) wraps up the 2013-14 slate with two games at Lawrence next weekend.
