L’Anse girls take down Hancock

L’ANSE – L’Anse moved to within a half-game of WestPAC leader Houghton by taking down Hancock 53-38 in a make-up girls’ basketball game Wednesday night.

L’Anse (15-3, 5-1 WestPAC) took control of the game by outscoring the Bulldogs 22-8 in the second quarter for a 34-13 halftime lead.

“We don’t look past them, we face them one more time in the districts (Feb. 24 in L’Anse). We wanted to have another good solid performance and maybe plant a seed of doubt,” L’Anse coach Scott Lloyd said.

Hancock started the game in a zone defense, and L’Anse regained the shooting touch lost in Monday’s defeat to Ishpeming to coax the Bulldogs farther from the basket.

“Once they did that, we started to get the ball to where we wanted it to be,” Lloyd said.

Madi Swanson led all scorers with 18 points, including three of the Hornets’ seven three-pointers. Kelsey Ross added 10 points.

Hancock (12-5, 3-4 WestPAC) got 11 points from Quincy Lorenzetti. The Bulldogs are at Republic-Michigamme tonight.

L’Anse begins the last week of the regular season Monday with a home game vs. West Iron County.
