Gremlins, Kings cruise; Jets lose

HOUGHTON – Houghton reached its 20th win of the season by dismissing Marquette 7-1 Thursday at Dee Stadium in Great Lakes Hockey Conference play.

Reid Pietila and Jon Bostwick each scored twice for Houghton (20-3), which can complete an unbeaten first run through the GLHC by winning at Hancock next Thursday.

Houghton’s next game is Tuesday at Jeffers.

Kingsford 3, Jeffers 2

IRON MOUNTAIN – Jeffers fell just short of an equalizer Thursday in Kingsford, as Flivver goalie Joe Bergland made 31 saves for the win in his first prep appearance.

Steve Suhonen gave the Jets (15-8-1) a 1-0 lead after the first, but Kingsford had the next three, all on the power play, two from Alex Wiitanen at 4:53 and 12:42 of the third period.

Anthony Harris pulled one back with a power-play tally of his own with 51 seconds to play, but that was it for the Jets.

Dax Durocher made 20 saves in defeat for Jeffers, which plays Tuesday at home vs. Houghton.

Calumet 8, Negaunee 1

CALUMET – Calumet scored four times in the first period and got five points from Robert Erkkila to cruise past Negaunee Thursday.

Erkkila had three goals and two assists for the Copper Kings, now 6-16-1 overall and 4-6 in the GLHC.

Logan Lemler, Tyler Loukus, Ryan Nelson, Braden Anderson and Tyler Vertin also notched goals, while Eric Mattila had a playmaker.

Tyler Hubbard stopped 13 of 14 shots for the win.

Calumet plays its final home game of the season tonight against Escanaba.
