The Republicans’ war on women
To the editor:
At the recent Republican National Committee winter meeting, evangelical and former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee made the incredible statement, “Republicans aren’t waging a war on women.” If they aren’t waging war on women, why did Republicans block aid to Marie Stopes International, a global family planning organization that provides family planning services to millions of Africa’s poorest women?
Why did Republicans oppose The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 which passed the Senate (61-36) with 36 Republicans opposed, and the House (250-177) with 174 Republicans opposed. Why did Republicans oppose the 2013 renewal of The Violence against Women’s Act which passed the Senate (78-22) with 22 Republicans opposed, and the House (286-138) with 130 Republicans opposed.
The Republicans’ treatment of women as second class citizens originates in their Bible, possibly the most misogynistic book ever written.
A few examples for illumination. (Woman) Eve tempted Adam and caused mankind’s downfall (Genesis 3:16-18). Leviticus 12:1-6 says a mother was unclean for 40 days after birthing a boy but 80 days after birthing a girl. Women tempted Solomon (Nehemiah 13:26) and caused him to sin. 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 says women are unworthy to participate in church services in any capacity (e.g minister, teacher, choir member, or organist). 1 Timothy 2:11-12 says women should not teach nor usurp authority over a man. Genesis 19 condones incest between Lot and his daughters. Jephthah sacrifices his daughter and only child (Judges 11:30-39) as a burnt offering sacrifice to fulfill his vow to God for a military victory.
Woman becomes the personification of evil in Zachariah 5:5-10. Women are excluded (Luke 3:23-31) from the 41 generations of Jesus’ genealogy back to King David. There are no women in heaven and only God’s sons (Genesis 6:3, Job 1:6, Romans 8:19) are mentioned in the Bible, never his daughters.
Who is the perfect Republican woman? Genesis 3:16, “thy husband shall rulethee.” 1 Peter 3:1-6 (Oxford Study Bible), “you women must submit to your husbands like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him master.” 1 Timothy 2:15,”Salvation for a woman will be in bearing children”
