Hancock hockey saved by buzzer
HANCOCK – The Hancock hockey team held on by the slimmest of margins to defeat Escanaba 3-2 Saturday in Great Lakes Hockey Conference play at Houghton County Arena.
The Eskymos’ Calvin Pinar shot the puck into the net after Derek Chaillier’s shot caromed off the glass, but the puck was ruled to have crossed the line after the expiration of the game clock.
After a scoreless first period, Hancock was awarded a penalty shot for a covered puck in the crease during a power play. Brett Lepisto converted it for a 1-0 lead at 8:19 of the second period.
Zach Ahola tacked on an additional power-play goal late in the period to make 2-0 after two.
Escanaba pulled one back early in the third, only for Hancock to reestablish its two-goal lead minutes later on Lepisto’s second of the game.
Escanaba scored again at 6:09 but its equalizer proved just too late.
Jacob Givens earned the win with 19 saves for the Bulldogs, who held a 35-21 shot advantage.
Hancock (14-6-3, 6-2-2 GLHC) plays at Kingsford Tuesday night.
