Daavettila tops CCC All-Stars
HOUGHTON – Dollar Bay senior guard Julia Daavettila was named most valuable player in All-Copper Country Conference girls’ basketball voting for 2013-14.
Daavettila averaged 18.5 points per game this season and reached the 1,000 mark for her career in the regular season finale. She led the Bays to their first outright conference championship since 1979, an accomplishment that also netted Steve Krahling coach of the year recognition.
Three seniors and two juniors made up the rest of the first team.
Ontonagon’s Brooke Turin was just behind Daavettila in the league scoring race, averaging 18.2 per game and directing the Gladiators to second place in the CCC standings.
Senior point guard Shelby Seppanen of Jeffers was also selected. She averaged 12.9 points per game and her 35-point night against the eventual champs in December was the most by any Copper Country player since March 2010. Also making the cut was Jet teammate Haley Makela, a junior. Makela averaged 10.6 points and was one of, if not the best, rebounders in the league.
Baraga senior Melissa Putala was selected for the first team. She averaged 7.7 points per game.
The last first-teamer is Lake Linden-Hubbell junior guard Sarah Audette, who averaged 10.8 points per game as a stabilizing force for a Lakes team that fought the injury bug hard in 2013-14.
Five players from five teams were selected for the All-GLHC Second Team: Chassell senior guard Kirsten Daavettila, LL-H senior guard Erin Gast, Baraga junior forward Gabby Mayo, Ontonagon senior guard Molly Domitrovich and Dollar Bay junior forward Jamie Sertich.
Three players received honorable mention, sophomores Lori Wardynski (Ontonagon) and Abby Sutherland (LL-H) and senior Jenna Heikkinen of Baraga.
