Houghton boys busted in Marquette

MARQUETTE – Rough shooting and tough Marquette defense made for a deadly combination in Houghton’s boys’ basketball regular season finale Friday, a 62-29 loss.

“We had open looks all throughout the game and we just couldn’t sink ’em. That’s basketball. You’ve got to make your shots to win the game,” Houghton coach Jared Lawson said.

The U.P.’s No. 2 team in Class ABC, Marquette used a 19-6 second quarter edge to lead 31-13 at the half, an edge that proved more than enough.

Houghton was 4-for-30 from 3-point range, just 11-for-50 from the field on the night and had no scorers in double figures.

Vejas Grazulis scored 15 points for Marquette, which had four players score at least 11.

Houghton was led by eight from Trent Keteri and takes a 12-6 record into the Class B district tournament. The Gremlins play Monday night at Kingsford.
