John P. Keranen

ATLANTIC MINE – John P. Keranen, 76, of Atlantic Mine, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

He was born on May 12, 1937, in Hancock, a son of the late Abel and Lydia (Naasko) Keranen, and was a 1955 graduate of the Hancock Central High School.

John was employed as a semi-truck driver and an auto mechanic, working in the Copper Country and the Marquette area.

On October 24, 1959, he was married to the former, Joan Brassard. She preceded him in death on October 24, 2009.

John enjoyed woodworking, fishing and camping.

Surviving are three sons and two daughters, Barbara (Robert) Kukkonen of Atlantic Mine, Steven Keranen of North Carolina, Kirk (Pam) Keranen, of North Carolina, Kevin (Suzanne) Keranen of Wisconsin, Diane Keranen of Atlantic Mine; 12 grandchildren, Alan, Stephanie, Nicholas, Mark, Amber, Jeremy, Hunter, Tanner, Shawna, Venn, Zane and Harley; five great-grandchildren, Solomon, Presley, Nevin, Brylee and Ryder; a brother, Robert Keranen of Hancock; a sister, Joyce (Phil) LeFebvre of Lake Linden; a sister-in-law, Bonnie (Tony) Datto of South Range; a special family friend, Heather Platzke of Atlantic Mine; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, John was also preceded in death by three sisters, Irene, Helen and Dorothy; and a brother, Wesley.

Private memorial services will be held in the spring.
