Grateful for help, support

To the editor:

On February 15 six Finlandia students hosted a Soup and Salad Lunch and Silent Auction fund-raiser at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The students are raising money to participate in the ninth annual Service and Learning in Tanzania Experience from April 29-May 19. Since 2006 this 3-credit course has provided 56 students with the experience of living, working and learning alongside teachers and students at Kisarawe Lutheran Secondary School and nurses at Muhimbili Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I want to express our thanks to all who turned out for the event to make it a success, especially those faithful, reliable community members who come every year.

We couldn’t have put the event on without the help of others. Special thanks go to Finlandia University and individuals who generously contributed food and supplies. Gloria Dei was also a great partner in allowing us to hold two fund-raisers at the church this spring.

Special recognition and appreciation go to area businesses for donating valuable auction items:

Applebee’s, Bookworm, Chickadees, Copper Country Community Art Center, Copper World, Cyberia Cafe, Domino’s Pizza, Dreamland Hotel, Family Video, Finlandia University Cafeteria, Freedom Valu Center, Hunan Garden, Joey’s Seafood & Grill, Jim’s Foodmart, Jim’s Pizza-Hancock, Keweenaw Consignment, Keweenaw Crafts, Lunch Bag, Mine Shaft, Mont Ripley, North Wind Books, Northwoods Sporting Goods, Regis Hair Salon, Sew Sisters, Suomi Restaurant, Sounds & Motion, Super 8, Surplus Outlet, Tropical Escapes, and Victoria’s Kitchen.

Finally, we offer a heartfelt thank-you to all the individuals who showed their support through the numerous attractive and personally created items given for the auction.

Thank you for investing in this opportunity for the young people preparing for this relationship-driven experience in Tanzania in May. One can learn about others through books, classroom, or inquiry, but one can only learn from others through personal encounter.
