State champ Storm shuffling off to Buffalo

The Keweenaw Storm U-19 girls’ hockey team accomplished its fourth state title in a row, winning the USA Hockey Michigan Tier II tournament Sunday in Dearborn. Team members include Stephanie Kings, Erin McKenzie, Cassidy Rajala, Lexi Pyykkonen, Jessica Schlaff, Megan Yeo, Sara Hockings, Selena Stromer, Jennifer Hannon, Vivienne Kallio, Chelsea Jacques, Kaaren Liston, Kenna Farrey, Madison Labyak, Maybelline Beiring and Mackenzie Hietala with coaches Glenn Patrick, Joe Pyykkonen, Dave Yeo and Katie Temple.

The Storm opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over the Michigan Icebreakers with goals from Schlaff and Labyak.

Saturday, Keweenaw dumped the Michigan Ice Dogs 7-0. King earned the shutout in goal, Rajala scored twice and the Storm got goals from Schlaff, Hietala, Jacques, Beiring and Stromer as well as a playmaker from Pyykkonen.

The Storm and Icebreakers met in the championship Sunday, with Keweenaw defeating the metro Detroit outfit 3-0. King had another shutout, while the Storm’s goals came from Schlaff, Hietala and Farrey.

Keweenaw is now headed to the USA Hockey Tier II National Championship, to take place April 2-6 in Amherst, N.Y. (near Buffalo).

The team will be raising funds for the trip in a variety of ways. There will be a truck parked at Econo Foods in Houghton and Pat’s IGA in Calumet to collect returnables for donation as well as a pancake breakfast March 29 at a location to be determined.
