It took a while, but LBFE board finally got it right

The Board of Directors of the local office of Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly has named Cathy Kass-Aten as executive director, a move we whole heartedly support and endorse. We can think of no one more qualified to take the helm of this vital non-profit than Ms. Kass-Aten, who has been with the organization for more than 32 years, the last 24 here in the Keweenaw as the volunteer coordinator. The only downside to her appointment is that it took so long.

When long-time Executive Director Mike Aten, Kass-Aten’s husband, left the position last fall, to us it was a no-brainer his wife, who in many ways has been the face of LBFE for decades would take the helm.

She declined the opportunity and the board hired Chris DiGiulio. But when DiGiulio unexpectantly stepped down without explanation in January, Kass-Aten filled in on an interim basis and was eventually the only candidate interviewed for the position.

While the hire of Kass-Aten guarantees a smooth transition, she brings so much more to the table than that.

She has spent the last quarter century coordinating the activity of volunteers, the lifeblood of the organization. Her gift for motivation as well as her organizational skills and compassion for this area’s seniors guarantee Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly is headed in the right direction for many years to come.
