Linzy Leigh Monticello

RAPID RIVER, Mich. – Linzy Leigh Monticello, 24, of Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Rapid River, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 3, 2014, at her residence in Rapid City.

Linzy was born May 9, 1989, in Hancock, the daughter of Gerald T. and Patti A. Monticello and Melanie B. Pharr. She was raised in Rapid River where she attended the Rapid River Public Schools. Linzy excelled in sports and academics and participated in basketball, track and softball. Her memory of playing basketball in the MHSAA State Finals was always a topic that made her have a special glow. She graduated in 2007 as her class salutatorian.

Linzy continued her education at Finlandia University on an academic scholarship where she played four years on the Finlandia University women’s basketball team. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice in 2011. Following graduation, she worked for Campioni Enterprises as a manager at their South Range location. In May of 2013, she moved to Rapid City, S.D., where she worked as a corrections officer for the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department.

Linzy loved to exercise and especially enjoyed running. No matter what she was doing, she would always give it 110 percent. Her friends and family meant the world to her, and she would always go out of her way to make someone’s day a little brighter. She also loved spending time with her dog “Weezy.” She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River.

Survivors include her parents Gerry and Patti Monticello of Rapid River and Melanie Scott of Houghton; brothers, PJ Monticello of Rapid River and Michael and Bruce Scott of Houghton; sister, Ashleigh Monticello of Alpena Community College; grandparents, Phil and Judy Monticello of Hancock and Jim and Alice Johnson of Rapid River, Thomas and Dianne Pharr of Battle Creek, Mich., and Myra Walman of Houghton; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.

Linzy’s family will receive friends on Friday, April 11, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Linzy L. Monticello will follow at 6 p.m. with Rev. Stephen Gauger of the Calvary Lutheran Church officiating.

Luncheon will follow in the Calvary Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Rapid River.
