Eleanor Kate Peterson
CALUMET – Eleanor Kate Peterson, 85, of Calumet, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where she has resided for the past eight years.
She was born on February 3, 1929, in Princess Point, a daughter of Erick and Helmi (Nikkinen) Palo and was a graduate of Lake Linden High School. Eleanor was united in marriage to Gordon A. Peterson on March 31, 1951, and the couple resided in Hancock and Calumet. She worked at the Vienna Bakery, Apostolic Home for the Aged, and a private agency doing home health care.
She was a lifelong member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church of Calumet.
Eleanor enjoyed walking, cross-country skiing, baking, cooking, being surrounded by her children and grandchildren and watching Calumet hockey. She was admired for her sisu following her stroke at age fifty-one.
Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Arthur, Erick, Arvi; five sisters, Sophie Palo, Matilda Kluck, Linda LeDuc, Helmi Kokko, Aili Kauppi; her husband, Gordon; and son, Gordie.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda and Dave Pelli of Laurium, Janet and Peter Larson of Atlantic Mine, Sara (Peterson) Autio of Laurium; three sons, Paul and Carol of Hancock, Karl and Nora of Calumet, Mark and Barb of Bootjack and Brighton; one sister, Eva and Weldon Jurva of Hancock; a sister in law, Sylvia Eix of Hancock; 33 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service for Mrs. Peterson will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet with Pastor David Taivalkoski officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service all at the church.
Spring burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
