Elvia A. Dreis

ISHPEMING – Elvia A. Dreis, 82, went home to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ early Thursday morning, April 17, 2014 with her family by her side at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where she resided for the past four years.

Elvia was born on January 3, 1932 to Hjalmer and Julianna (Palovaara) Wanhatalo in Elo. She graduated from the John A. Deolle High School in Tapiola and then went on to St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Hancock, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1955. She worked in various hospitals and nursing homes in both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. After moving to Ishpeming in 1971 she was employed by Bell Memorial Hospital and later at the Mather Nursing Center, retiring in 1998.

Elvia married Paul W. Dries on August 20, 1955, and together they raised five children. Her faith in Jesus and times spent together with family were central to her life. She was an excellent baker and cook and is known for making delicious pastys and Finnish treats.

She was a member of Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was active in the choir, quilting group, teaching Sunday School, and in the Women’s Missionary Fellowship. One could always find her busy serving in the kitchen for various functions.

Elvia is survived by four daughters, Julie Racine, Kathy Howard, Susie Joki all of Ishpeming, and Carol (Kyle) Mackey of Humboldt; one son, Pete (Amy) Dreis of Green Bay, Wis; 14 grandchildren, Paul (Nykki) Racine, Sean (Amy) Racine, Nicole (Bart) Ford, Joe Racine, Dan Tonge, Jeremy (Jodi) Joki, Luke Joki, Cara (Bill) Goodall, Jared (Kari) Mackey, David (Lindsay) Mackey, Kristi (Anthony) Carello, Samantha (Dustin) Rickman, Alex and Alicia Dreis; 15 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elvia was preceded in death by her husband, Paul on March of 2011; her parents; one sister, Linnea Frederickson; and one brother, Wilho Wanhatalo.

Funeral services for Elvia will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2014 in the Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ishpeming Twp, with Rev. Micah Hjermstad officiating.

Elvia’s family will greet relatives and friends on Monday in the Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 3 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Elvia’s grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the workers at MCMCF for their caring and compassionate care for our mom and to Pastor Mike and Annette Carriere for their ministry to Elvia through their church services there.
