An Easter Tradition
people were guaranteed friends and a good meal through Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly’s Easter dinners across the Copper Country Sunday.
Sit-down meals were held in Baraga, Calumet, Copper City, Houghton, Ontonagon, South Range and Tapiola – and, for the second time, Marquette. Home meals were also delivered from Houghton and Laurium.
Diners sat down to a meal of ham, potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables and a variety of desserts.
“I just think it’s a really lovely way to spend your Easter – companionship, good food and someone to share a smile with,” said Rebekka Mikkola, visiting program coordinator for Little Brothers. “The holiday dinners are where you see how awesome the community is, and the support.”
More than 100 local businesses had donated for the dinner, Mikkola said.
Sunday’s dinner at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Houghton was filled with more people than usual – about 100, Mikkola said. The dinner expanded because the site in Hancock wasn’t available, as it had a social scheduled for that day.
“Even if you know people from Hancock you don’t like, make them feel welcome, because it’s Easter, after all,” joked cook Ken Steiner, who usually leads the Hancock dinner.
Fortunately, the diners only used their forks and knives to cut up ham or spear a chunk of potato.
Lois DeGraff of Hancock usually attends the Hancock dinner each year. She likes the dinners for the communal spirit.
“It’s seeing all the people, you’re celebrating with other people,” she said.
Pearl Savela of Trimountain said the food was “wonderful.”
“It’s the best place we could be, being away from home, and having friends and all,” she said. “And we know here, each one helps the other if they need it.”
