Outdoor opener full of runs
AURA – The Copper County high school softball season finally kicked off on Monday night with a doubleheader between Calumet and L’Anse (playing its first softball game in school history).
Calumet won the first game of the twinbill 16-9. Game two was tied 15-15 at the end of seven innings and called due to darkness.
The Copper Kings busted open a close first game with eight runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Ellen Twardzik went 3-for-4 and scored three times, while Morgan Peters was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts.
The second game was mostly led by the Purple Hornets. By the sixth inning, they led by six runs, but the Copper Kings erased the deficit in their last at-bat culminating on a bases-clearing 3-RBI triple to centerfield by Celia Peterson.
The Copper Kings retired the side scoreless in the seventh but it was ruled the game could not continue into extra innings.
Selena Stromer had a team-best three hits in game two and scored three times. May Beiring added a pair of hits.
Both teams have their next scheduled games against Hancock: Calumet plays at Hancock Saturday and L’Anse hosts the Bulldogs next Monday.
