George Leskinen

AHMEEK – George Leskinen, 93, the oldest living male resident of Ahmeek passed away on Monday, April 28, 2014 at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium.

He was born on May 24, 1920 in Ahmeek, a son of Paul and Hilda (Matson) Leskinen. George attended the Ahmeek School and graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1939. He went to work for Chrysler until drafted into the U.S. Army. He served during WW II in the Pacific with the 81st Infantry Division. He fought in the battle for Angaur Island and was awarded the Bronze Star.

After his honorable discharge in 1946, he worked in lower Michigan, met and married Anniebelle Landrum of Milwaukee. They returned to the Ahmeek area and opened George and Annie’s Grocery Store, which they later sold to Gabe Chopp in 1955.

They moved downstate and George went to work as a Weighmaster for the State of Michigan. In the 70’s he transferred to be a bridge operator in Ontonagon and later the Portage Lift Bridge in Hancock until his retirement. Residing in Ahmeek, he was a devoted husband and son, taking care of his wife and mother who were in ill health. Both preceded him in death in 1980.

On May 9, 1981 he was married to Lieu Lam of California. George taught her to snowshoe and ski, snowmobile and shared his love for golf with her. They golfed many years at the Calumet Golf Course and Sandy Pebbles. He also made and repaired golf clubs for many in the area.

He was an avid bowler and loved hunting, fishing, boating and all sports. Hobbies included picking, polishing and making jewelry out of agates, birdseye maple woodcrafts, and his specialty clocks. He also was quite the trickster, loved a good joke and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by all.

Also preceding him in death were his father; brothers, Urho (Laina), Arnie (Eleanore), Laurie (Carrie), Karl, Eddie, Dan (Joy) and Bill (Barbara); sister, Gertie (Ernie) Mella; and stepson, Perry Landrum.

Surviving is his wife, Lieu; stepchildren, Barbara Hankovich, Troy (Tina) Lam, Chong (Hu Hong) Vo; daughter-in-law, Honh (Paul) Azer; sister, Eva Johnson; special grandson, Joe Hankovich; sister-in-laws, Florence and Pilar Leskinen; and all the extended families.

Services for George will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Bethany Lutheran Church in Mohawk with Pastor Tim Johnston to officiate.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 at the Church.

Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy memorials may be given to Bethany Lutheran Church 85 6th Street Mohawk, MI 49950.
