Campioni brothers purchase store in Wis.
CALUMET – The owners of a local chain of grocery stores have just added another facility with the purchase of a building which housed a grocery store in Florence, Wis.
Ben Campioni, owner of the Calumet Pat’s Foods, said he and his brother, Joe, on April 29 purchased the former Haberkorn’s Supermarket.
Campioni said the 20,000-square-foot store will be remodeled inside and out.
“We’re going to have a full grocery store and a hardware store,” he said. “I’m redoing the whole store. It’s going to be a state-of-the-art facility.”
Campioni said the new building will be environmentally friendly, also, with the meat section behind closed doors to reduce energy use.
“We’re trying to make this a green facility,” he said.
Haberkorn’s closed in 2007, Campioni said, and he and his brother have been interested in the building for awhile.
“We’ve been watching it for the last five or six years,” he said.
The price for the building finally got to where they felt they could make an offer on it, Campioni said. They were able to purchase it with the help of a Wisconsin Economic Development grant.
Currently, Campioni said the family has Pat’s Food stores in Calumet, Hancock, L’Anse and Ontonagon. They have Festival Foods in Houghton. They also currently have two hardware stores. The Florence location will be called Pat’s Foods.
Campioni said the remodeling work should be done in time for the store to open June 25.
“We don’t want to miss the summer selling season,” he said.
Florence residents have had to travel quite a distance to go grocery shopping, Campioni said, so they’ll appreciate having another store in town.
“We’re real excited,” he said.
