L’Anse walks off to sweep doubleheader
AURA – L’Anse capped its weekend with a walk-off, defeating Jeffers 14-13 Saturday in the second game of a softball doubleheader after clubbing the Jets 22-7 (four innings) in the opener.
L’Anse trailed 13-12 going to its last at-bats. Emily Magaraggia drew a lead-off walk, Jess Rossi followed with a base on balls and both scored when Kelsey Ross’s hit was misplayed.
“We fought hard for this win. It was one of those games where things weren’t going our way and the balls were just dropping in Jeffers’ favor time after time,” L’Anse coach Janet Rossi said.
Jess Rossi, Abbey Hendrickson and Bailey Froberg all had multi-hit games in the second contest. Maegan Kraft claimed the win in relief of Bailey Froberg. Kraft pitched the last six innings and struck out five.
In the opener, Magaraggia finished 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, Nicole Rossi was 3-for-3 and both Ross and Kraft had 3-for-4 games, with Kraft homering.
Jeffers put up six of their seven runs in the top of the fourth, but L’Anse quickly extinguished the threat with 10 of their own in the bottom half to trigger the run rule.
Nicole Rossi was the winning pitcher, going the distance and striking out seven Jets.
L’Anse is scheduled to host Houghton today, while Jeffers is also in action, at Hancock.
