Tech’s Lane makes NCAA 1500
HOUGHTON – Student-athletes from the Michigan Tech track and field teams traveled to various locations over the week to get one more shot at qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Jani Lane earned his trip to the NCAAs in the 1500 on Thursday at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Meet. He ran 3:46.53 to break his own school record by over five seconds. He was second overall.
Also at the Dr. Keeler Meet in Naperville, Ill., Deedra Irwin broke the school record in the 800 with a time of 2:14.08. She placed fifth overall. Sean Pengelly ran the 5,000 (15:41.25/24th) and Chrispin Johnston sprinted in the 100 (12.07/33rd) and 200 (23.47/42nd).
Three throwers began a busy week on Wednesday night at the Aquinas Twilight Invite in Allendale, Mich. Kyle Petermann had the second longest discus throw in Tech history at 162-7. He placed second. In the shot put, Petermann had a mark of 42-7.5 to place sixth. Jared Berryman was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 48-4.75. He was also fifth in the discus with a season best throw of 156-9. It was the fifth best mark in Tech history. Steven Saliga threw 162-9 in the javelin to place second. Natalie Berryman had a couple of top 10 marks in Tech history in the shot put (39-7.25/6th) and discus (134-5/8th).
Brent Cousino and Isaac Pringle were downstate on Thursday for the Hillsdale Classic. Cousino placed seventh in the decathlon with 5,997 points. It was the seventh best mark in school history. Pringle was ninth in the 400 with a time of 50.21.
Saliga threw 168-7 in the javelin at the GVSU Second to Last Chance Meet on Friday. The toss was the seventh best all-time at Tech and placed him fourth. Jared Berryman had his best mark of the season in the shot put, and the eighth best in Tech history, with a toss of 51-3. He was seventh overall and also 11th in the discus (147-11). Petermann had a mark of 152-11 in the discus, the sixth best at Tech, to place eighth. Natalie Berryman had a mark of 39-0.25 in the shot put and 128-8 in the discus.
At the GVSU Last Chance Meet on Saturday, Patrick Spalding cleared 14-5.25 to place ninth in the pole vault. Petermann (156-5) placed 13th in the discus with the fifth best all-time mark at Tech. Jared Berryman had a mark of 48-10.25 in the shot put and 154-5 (sixth all-time) in the discus. Steven Saliga threw 163 feet in the javelin, placing him sixth. Natalie Berryman added another top 10 mark with a season best toss of 40-9.75 in the shot put. It was the second best mark all-time. She also competed in the discus (114-10).
