Lauri L. Lappi

HUMBOLDT TOWNSHIP – Lauri L. Lappi, 90, longtime Humboldt Townshipresident, passed away on Friday, May 9, 2014. At the time of his death, he was under the compassionate care of his daughter and her family in Chassell.

Lauri was born on April 10, 1924, in Champion, the son of the late Matt and Amanda (Ylinen) Lappi. He was third of six children and attended Champion School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He married Elsie Sirvio in Detroit, Michigan in 1948; they moved to Humboldt where they raised six children. He worked many years for C.C.I., retiring in 1986. He was a lifelong member of the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church, and in his later years was also a member of the Champion Apostolic Lutheran Church.

He is survived by four sons, David Lappi of Michigamme, Thomas (Lori) Lappi of Newberg, Oregon, Peter (Andrea) Lappi of Chassell and John (Judy) Lappi of Greer, South Carolina; two daughters, Christine Hoiem of Marquette and Grace (Mark) Antioho of Chassell; two sisters, Aili Hanks of Champion and Taimi Johnson of Warren, Michigan; three nieces and one nephew.

He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Annette (Michael) Impola, Kathryn (Greg) Impola, Matthew (Misty) Lappi, Grant (Brianna) Lappi, Amy (Chad) Graves, Cindy (Wesley) Parkinson, David (Michelle) Hoiem, Peter (Amy) Antioho, Ruth Antioho, Rachel Antioho (fiance, Kenton Waineo), Sarah Antioho, Jacob Lappi (fiance, Alyssa Goodman), and Jenna (Tyler Williams) Lappi. He was blessed with 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elsie, in 2004; daughter-in-law, Evelyn; two brothers, Bill and George; and a sister, Bertha.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, in the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church in Negaunee.

Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church with Pastors Dale Niskanen and Andrew Kandoll officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 380 at the conclusion of the services.

Interment will take place at the Humboldt Twp. Cemetery.
