Copper Kings win on another big rally

LAURIUM – Calumet had multiple highlights on the softball diamond Thursday against L’Anse.

Not only did Selena Stromer homer twice in a 12-3 win in game one, the Copper Kings rallied from 11-6 down after 5 1/2 innings to win the nightcap 13-12.

The Copper Kings remain undefeated at 7-0-1.

In the second game, L’Anse put up four runs in the second and fifth innings to take a commanding lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, hits from Clara Loukus, Megan Yeo and Cassie Feeley set up a deep shot by Ellen Twardzik that was mishandled in right field and cleared the bases.

L’Anse briefly stopped the momentum with a single run in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 12, but Feeley and Loukus singled to start the bottom of the inning. Feeley was forced out on a fielder’s choice, but Loukus took third on a passed ball and scored the winning run on another passed ball.

In the opener, Calumet took a 3-0 lead after two innings, then pulled away with six runs in the third. Emily Lahnala drove in two with a double and Celia Peterson’s single drove in two more.

Morgan Peters got the win in both games.
