Combined no-hitter pitched on big Little League weekend
HOUGHTON – In an interleague Major (age 11-12) baseball game at Hancock Driving Park Saturday, pitchers Lars Massie and Eli Larson combined to throw a no-hitter in a 5-4 win over 41 Lumber.
Ryan Moilanen added a double for the winners.
J. Peltier Construction got four strong innings from pitcher Jackson Rocchi in an 8-3 win over the Portage Health Major Green Sox. Rocchi allowed a run on four hits, struck out eight and walked one. Taylor Gardner finished up, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Gardner, Davin Hill and Isaiah Little had two-hit games for the winners.
Ghassan Aboudah posted a pair of hits for Portage Health.
In Keweenaw Little League Major play, Loading Zone earned a comfortable victory over Copper World.
Jesse Hill and Nick Djerf had three-hit games, Hill drove in five runs and Djerf and Ashton Marttila both had three RBIs. Djerf struck out five in four innings.
In Portage Lake Little League Minor (age 9-10) play in Stanton, Auto Pro Glass and Tire edged the Portage Health Minor Green Sox 10-9.
Heads-up baserunning and clutch RBIs from Chase Crisman and Austin Miller made a big difference down the stretch. Miller, Ian Nordstrom and Chad Nordstrom combined on the pitching effort, racking up 15 strikeouts.
For the Green Sox, Ryan Vlahos had five strikeouts in two innings and allowed only one hit. He had two singles of his own. Nicolas Horning had two triples and a single and Ty Haataja singled in his Little League debut.
Also in Stanton, Tervo Insurance defeated Houghton Rotary 13-2. Dylan Primeau pitched three innings, striking out the side in each. He allowed one run on three hits.
Tobias Summerville was 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Tervo’s successful attack, which included triples from Chase Benson and Nathan Isaacson.
Quinn Donnelly went four innings for the Rotarians, striking out eight. He added two hits, while Tim Gary had an inside-the-park homer.
South Range VFW defeated Kissel Chevrolet 13-8 in South Range.
Kade Farrell was the winning pitcher, fanning four in two innings of work. Andrew Kinnunen had two hits for the winners.
Leroy Bastian had three hits for Kissel.
In Minor softball, Aspirus Keweenaw topped Kevin’s Self Storage 8-3. Haley Schjoth, Isabelle Cleary and Kalli Chynoweth each had two hits, while Cleary struck out 13 in a winning pitching effort.
