Cleary walk-off hero for J. Peltier Little Leaguers

HOUGHTON – A bloop single made Isaac Cleary the walk-off hero of the day after he delivered the game-winning RBI for J. Peltier Construction in an 8-7 Portage Lake Little League Major (age 11-12) division win over the Portage Health Green Sox in South Range Monday.

The hit culminated a back-and-forth thriller and rendered the Green Sox’s comeback from 7-3 down going into their last at-bat.

Carson Chynoweth sent the game to extra innings with his two-RBI single with two outs to tie it.

In the bottom of the seventh, two walks and a fielder’s choice set up Cleary’s single into center.

For the winners, Isaiah Little had three-extra base hits (two doubles and a triple), while Christian Hocking and Thomas Bump finished with two hits apiece.

Taylor Gardner earned the win in relief, allowing a run on two hits in five innings, with five strikeouts and two walks.

Starter Davin Hill went five innings and allowed six runs on eight hits, but struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter.

For the Green Sox, Chynoweth took the loss in relief of P.J. Donnelly, who ended up just short of a complete game, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out 10 and walked just one.

Collin Cowell had a pair of doubles, and Craig Berg also had two hits.

In the late game at South Range, Chassell VFW outslugged Matt’s Auto Glass 14-8, fueled by pairs of hits from both Malakai Sherwood and Caleb Bach.

Baxter Laitila Yates and Ryan Moilanen recorded two hits apiece for Matt’s.

In an interleague game at Village Park in Lake Linden, the Loading Zone rolled to a 13-3 victory thanks to a nine-run first inning.

Cole Gregorie got the complete-game win, recording five strikeouts in his four-inning outing. He allowed three earned runs on two hits.

Caleb Gregorie tripled as part of his two hits. Nick Djerf doubled, and both had a pair of RBIs.

For Pat’s, Colton Salani had both his team’s hits.

In Junior (age 13-14) baseball, Sayen’s Auto dropped The Library 11-6. Grant Hokenson, Aaron Barnes, Clayton Sayen and Jayden Janke all had RBI hits in support of Janke, who went four innings for the win.

The Library rallied with five of their runs in the late innings on RBIs from Jaden Wood, Pat Cortright, Kevin Bostwick and Tyler Cleary.

In Minor softball, Kevin’s Self Storage topped Favorites 7-3 with the help of 11 strikeouts from Gabrielle Mukavetz in four scoreless innings. Mukavetz also aided her cause with three hits.

Marina Kero struck out 11 in four innings for Favorites.

Kirsten Dennis finished up with two solid innings of relief and both she and Keegan Leonard scored twice.

Also in that division, Aspirus Keweenaw topped Calumet 15-14 in a barnburner. Madisyn Holombo’s inside-the-park homer game Aspirus the lead and Isabelle Cleary shut the game down with three strikeouts in the final inning.

Kaydence Kilpela earned the win and Breanna Datto had two hits for Aspirus.
