Fishing for a purpose

ONTONAGON – Spring is finally showing itself, and one evidence of that is the start of the fishing tournament season in the Copper Country.

Sheila Hoefferle, event coordinator for the Ontonagon County Cancer Association, said the organization’s 2014 Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital Lake Trout Classic will take place from May 30 to June 1.

The purpose of the event is to raise money for the OCCA.

The Lake Trout Classic is sponsored by Greig’s Taxidermy and Tackle, Hoefferle said.

From 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 30, Hoefferle said a Ladies Powder Puff Tournament will take place in the village of Ontonagon and Silver City. The tournament is sponsored by Moonshine Lures. First prize for the tournament is $200.

The Lake Trout Classic Tournament is from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 31, and 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 1, Hoefferle said. It also operates out of the village of Ontonagon and Silver City. First place is $1,200, second place is $600 and third place is $400. There are also product prizes from fourth to eighth place.

The entry fee for the fishing tournaments is $25. Awards for the fishing tournaments will be presented at 3 p.m. June 1 at the Ontonagon marina.

On May 31, Hoefferle said there will a Barbecue for Life competitive cook off from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the village of Ontonagon recreation center. Teams of barbecuers will compete for prizes. The sponsors of the event are radio station WUPY-FM and Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital.

Over the years, Hoefferle said the three-day event has been well-supported by the community.

Hoefferle said money raised the fishing tournament is a big help for the OCCA.

“It’s very important,” she said.

“It has been a wonderful fundraiser for our organization.”

Money raised is used for residents for such things as financial assistance, the organization’s equipment loan closet, rehabilitation services, information and counseling, public education and research assistance.

“Most of our funds are kept here,” Hoefferle said.
