Favorites, Tech Employees Credit Union win softball contests
HOUGHTON – Favorites got three hits (including a home run), three runs and solidly pitched innings from Marina Kero in a 14-6 Minor (age 9-10) softball win over Dirt Works Contracting Wednesday night at Gipp Recreation Area in Laurium.
Sophie Heinonen earned the win for Favorites.
In Major (age 11-12) softball, Michigan Tech Employees Federal Credit Union got 13 strikeouts from Delaney Heinonen in a 18-11 win over Pat’s Foods. Hannah Bastian reached safely three times and scored on each for MTEFCU.
Andrea Keranen doubled twice and scored three times for Pat’s.
In Keweenaw Little League Major baseball, Carter Crouch delivered three hits, including a pair of triples, as Loading Zone II cruised to a 16-2 win over 41 Lumber.
Cole and Caleb Gregorie puts up two hits apiece and combined to drive in three runs.
Kellen Klein and Nick Djerf split the pitching duties, each taking two innings. Klein struck out five and Djerf three.
For 41 Lumber, Hunter Rowe and Dustin Karnowski both doubled.
J. Peltier Construction doubled up Lassila Insurance 8-4 in Portage Lake Little League Major baseball.
A two-RBI single by Gabe Coppo tied the game for Lassila in the fourth inning, but JPC took the lead for good after Davin Hill tripled and Thomas Bump singled for a 6-4 lead after four, plus two more insurance runs in the fifth.
Isaiah Little had a single, a double, a triple and scored three times. Ethan Jarvela, Hill and Taylor Gardner combined on the pitching mound to allow four runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.
For Lassila, Seth Coppo had three hits and both Gabe Coppo and Doug Anderson had two.
The Portage Health Green Sox defeated Chassell VFW 12-7.
Portage led 7-6 after two very busy innings until Malakai Sherwood’s long solo shot.
The Green Sox countered with four runs to put the game firmly in their column. PH had 16 hits with three apiece from Ashton Janke, Craig Berg, P.J. Donnelly and Carson Chynoweth.
VFW finished with seven hits including triples by Eli Oldt and Kyle Maki.
Pat’s Foods blanked Matt’s Auto Glass 10-0 with Colton Salani fanning 13 batters. He walked two and gave up a single hit.
Salani also had three hits, with younger brother Austin adding two. Xander Zapolnik contributed a bases-clearing triple in the third for the victors.
In a PLLL Minor game Tuesday, Thrivent Financial dropped Kissel Chevrolet 16-6.
Dominik Pizzi posted a four-hit game in the win, while JD Sebbas and Erik Anderson had three and Tyler Sayen and Gaborik Carlson two. Sayen pitched four innings and struck out eight for the win.
Brandon Norkol recorded a pair of hits for Kissel.
Emmett Larson tripled twice and pitched two scoreless innings for Superior Service in a 7-6 victory over Auto Pro Glass and Tire Tuesday in Stanton.
Chad Nordstrom was 3-for-3 with a pair of triples and a pair of RBIs in defeat.
At Wolverine, Aspirus Keweenaw (Senior) defeated Middleton Builders (Junior) 11-2, combining on a one-hitter. Alex Voelker played a leading mound role with seven strikeouts in three scoreless innings.
Sam Kariniemi went 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Wyatt Loukus was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly.
