Fire claims life near Calumet

A house that was the scene of a fatal Sunday fire is seen this morning in Calumet Township. A 63-year-old woman was killed in the fire, which occurred at about 4:35 p.m. Sunday, Michigan State Police at the Calumet Post said in a release. Fire departments fought for four hours against the blaze, which was reported as fully engulfing the structure and possibly entrapping a person. The woman’s body was found inside once the fire was extinguished. Michigan State Police Calumet Post troopers will assist the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal in investigating the incident. Also responding to the scene were the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Calumet Township Fire Department, Laurium Village Fire Department, Laurium Village Police and Mercy Ambulance.
