Rose Jean Torvinen
HANCOCK – Rose Jean Torvinen, 88, of Hancock and North Fort Myers, Florida, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014, in Hancock.
She was born on December 19, 1925, in Detroit, a daughter of the late William and Gertrude (Giller) Wadsworth. At an early age, she moved with her family to Royal Oak where she attended school.
In 1943 she was first married to John Sweeney, Sr. and they lived and worked in Royal Oak for a number of years.
In 1964, Jean met Hyalmer “Mo” Torvinen, and they were married on July 10, 1965. A couple of years into their marriage, they purchased an orange grove in Florida and the family traveled between that location and tending the family farm near Boston Location. The couple had returned home each summer to the remaining acreage of the family farm since 1965 to run a fruit and vegetable market. Mo passed away on October 24, 2013.
Jean enjoyed her family and friends and remembered them often with cards, homemade jam and bakery. She considered her family and friends to be her most cherished blessings. She enjoyed golfing for relaxation.
She is survived by her son, John Jr.; daughters, Janet and Susan; her sister, Nancy; her nieces and nephews; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; as well as many other special family members and friends.
Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Bill; and a sister, Mary.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014, with visitation one hour prior in the First United Methodist Church in Hancock, with pastors Amy Terhune and Robert White officiating.
The O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock is assisting with the arrangements.
