J. Peltier, Matt’s Auto Glass hang zeroes in Major baseball
HOUGHTON – Hits were hard to come by for both sides Wednesday, but J. Peltier Construction emerged from a pitcher’s duel with Pat’s Foods 3-0 victors in a Portage Lake Little League Major (age 11-12) baseball game.
The combined efforts of Taylor Gardner (3 2/3 innings), Jackson Rocchi (1 1/3) and Davin Hill (1) led to a one-hit shutout.
The game was scoreless through four innings until Gardner led off with a double. He advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ethan Jarvela walked, stole second and both runners scored on wild pitches. In the top of the sixth, Hill and Isaiah Little recorded back-to-back singles for an insurance run.
Colton Salani took the tough-luck loss, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on two hits with 14 strikeouts and a single walk. He also had his team’s only hit, a first-inning double.
Matt’s Auto Glass defeated Portage Health 5-0 with Eli Larson (four innings) and Jiseung Choi (two) combining on the shutout. Jimmy Pietila had a double for the winners.
In an interleague game, Chassell VFW defeated Copper World (Keweenaw) 7-2. Caleb Bach and Kyle Maki sparked the VFW’s 13-hit attack with three apiece. Four players pitched, including a strong outing from Shawn Ruotsala.
Michigan Tech Employees Federal Credit Union went extra innings to defeat Superior Service 6-5 in Major softball.
Back-to-back triples by Delaney Heinonen and Madelyn Pierner gave MTEFCU the lead and though Superior Service got the tying run to second in the bottom half of the frame, Heinonen sealed the game with her 17th and final strikeout.
Hits from Molly Bugni and Daitlyn Markham helped Superior Service tie it in the top of the sixth.
In Minor softball, Kevin’s Self Storage dropped Calumet 14-2 in Laurium. Gabrielle Mukavetz had two hits, including a home run, for the winners. Kaela Blais and Keegan Leonard notched two hits apiece for the hosts. The win was Kevin’s second of the week after a 10-3 victory over Aspirus Kewwenaw Saturday in Houghton. Kirsten Dennis homered and was the winning pitcher. Emily Farmer chipped in two hits.
In Minor baseball Tuesday, Auto Pro Glass and Tire defeated Tervo Agency 14-8. Brad Johnson had three hits in the win, Chad Nordstrom, Elijah Packard and Austin Miller had two. Logan Sandell also homered for Auto Pro.
For Tervo, Dylan Primeau had three hits and Brandon Pietila two.
