Range gets first loss of Over 50 season

TAPIOLA – Tapiola handed South Range its first defeat of the season Thursday night in Over 50 Softball League play.

Tom Bauer singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure a 12-11 win as Tapiola moved to 2-2. Range dipped to 3-1.

Tom Clisch, Mike Harkonen and Jim Oikarinen all counted three hits for the winners. Dennis Salbashian, Steve Oger, Bill Petrelius and Andy Heikkinen picked up two apiece. Jed Denomie was the winning pitcher.

Jed Pollard and Tom LeGault had three raps each for Range, while losing chucker Dave Kaiponen slapped out two triples.

Houghton moved to 3-1 with a 12-10 8-inning win over Chassell in the other game.

Chassell scored eight times in the seventh frame to forge a 10-10 deadlock.

But Houghton tallied twice in the extra inning for the victory.

Dave Usitalo tripled among two hits for the victors, while Joe Geborkoff, Dick Franti and Dunstan added two hits.

Daryl Putala, Gordy Sedar and Nick Lindemann each had three raps for 0-4 Chassell. Tino Kitalong, Kevin Tormala and Steve Ross picked up two each.

Steve Dunstan was the winning pitcher, Steve Giddings took the mound defeat.
