Eleanor Pearl Nelson

HOUGHTON – Eleanor Pearl Nelson, 94, a former resident of Atlantic Mine, South Range and Arbor Green, Houghton, died on Thursday, June 12, 2014, at PortagePointe in Hancock, where she had been a patient for almost a year.

She was born on December 7, 1919, in Boston Location, a daughter of the late Gust and Marie (Bentila) Paananen.

On June 30, 1945, she married Walfred A. “Tony” Nelson in Hancock Township. He preceded her in death on December 8, 2013.

Eleanor was employed in housekeeping for 20 years at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, retiring from there.

Eleanor was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Atlantic Mine and was a life member of the Finnish Cultural Association of Farmington. She enjoyed cooking and loved animals. She was always willing to “pet sit” for anyone who needed someone to watch and care for their pets while they were away. Eleanor felt blessed to have a healthy life.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Linda Nelson of South Lyon, Michigan; two grandchildren, Steven Nelson of Commerce Twp., and Kelly (Joe) Hammond of Wixom, Michigan; three great-grandchildren, Collin and Trevor Nelson; and Mason Hammond; a sister-in-law, Martha Isaacson of Arbor Green, Houghton; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, Eleanor was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rudy and Reino Paananen.

As requested, cremation has taken place.

A private graveside inurnment will be held at the Waasa Cemetery.
